Microsoft’s virtual reality (VR) efforts are currently focusing on the PC market right now, not Xbox One X, according to the company.
During this week’s podcast, we raised an interesting question, how exactly does Microsoft get profits back on the Xbox One X which they’ll be selling at a loss, especially when all games will be available on other Xbox One consoles? My answer to this question was VR, but that might not be the case, at least not yet.
The Xbox One X was fully unveiled at E3 and will be a pretty damn powerful console offering full 4K capabilities among other things. It’s a console that’s essentially built for VR, but it looks like Xbox One VR is still a long way away.
Speaking with GameSpot, Microsoft general manager Dave McCarthy said that efforts are solely on PC right now, with console coming later.
“Our focus right now is admittedly on the PC space,” McCarthy said. “So we look at Windows 10, we see an open ecosystem for developers. We see a huge installed base of half a billion monthly active devices on Windows 10. And we say that feels like the right area of focus right now [for VR/AR].”
McCarthy went onto add that VR is yet to have its “killer experience”, a statement that’s been echoed throughout the industry.
“I would say developers are still finding their way to define the killer experience there, which is great at this point in its evolution overall. We believe in it enough that we have several of our first-party studios actually working on content for our Windows 10 devices. We’ll have more to talk about later this year on that.”
In the VR sector, Microsoft is working hard on their own kit, HoloLens, which blends VR and AR into a single product, though with current development kits costing around $3000, it’s going to be a long time until consumer-facing units are available.
