Blizzard has finally announced that Overwatch is getting a deathmatch mode that’s currently available on PC in the Public Test Realm (PTR). In addition, a new map has also been unveiled.
Since the game’s announcement, Blizzard has been pretty against adding deathmatch modes in Overwatch. With the game focused on team work, adding a deathmatch mode would be totally against the game’s core goal. So you can imagine our surprise when Blizzard announced that a free-for-all deathmatch mode was coming.
The mode will be coming to the game’s Arcade, an area where players can find a lot of unconventional modes, an area which Overwatch’s Jeff Kaplan has said has become a game changer.
“The coolest part of the Arcade is that it’s opened up our ability to as developers to introduce game modes to you guys that we wouldn’t normally feel comfortable putting in the quick-play or competitive rotation.”
Interestingly, Overwatch’s deathmatch mode will be a little unconventional compared to what players are used to. Rather than one player being a winner, all they have to do is come within the top half of players to gain rewards.
Deathmatch will also contain a series of maps which have been slightly modified for the new mode, as well as a brand new map, Chateau Guillard. Interestingly, this map has also been used to expand on Widowmaker’s story, as it used to be her home before her husband passed away.

Currently available in the PTR, players can face-off in either 20-player free-for-all matches, or in 6v6 team deathmatch modes.
