Balance Changes Coming to Hearthstone

Blizzard has introduced a number of balance changes to their collectable card game Hearthstone which may dramatically change the game especially for those who have some pretty strong Druid decks.

Blizzard has announced Patch 9.1 which will bring with it some changes to just five cards which might not seem much, but in the grander scheme of things these changes are pretty big. Four of these five cards have been in the game since the beginning and this change is set to curb the strength of some more popular builds as well as making room for newer cards, according to Blizzard.

Here’s a list of those changes:

  • Innervate – Now reads: Gain 1 Mana Crystal this turn only. (Down from 2)
  • Fiery War Axe – Now costs 3 mana. (Up from 2)
  • Hex – Now costs 4 mana. (Up from 3)
  • Murloc Warleader – Now reads: Your other Murlocs have +2 Attack. (Down from +2 Attack, +1 Health)
  • Spreading Plague – Now costs 6 mana. (Up from 5)

“After careful consideration, we chose to make changes to three Basic class cards: Innervate, Fiery War Axe, and Hex. While they can be regarded as staples in those classes’ card repertoires, too many Basic and Classic cards played in individual decks means less fun when new expansions are released,” said Blizzard in a press release.

These changes, while minimal, may make or break a players’ deck, which I guess is the intention here. It’ll encourage players to explore new expansions while also using these Basic cards for more general purposes rather than having decks rely on these types of cards.

In Blizzard’s blog post about the changes, they reveal some of the other changes considered to each card, which is pretty interesting, as well as explaining exactly why they settled on the changes they did.

I guess we’re all going to have to reconfigure our decks now…
