Amid Nintendo’s slew of announcements earlier this week, Nintendo revealed the newest title for their pinkest, roundest mascot.
Kirby Battle Royale for the 3DS pits Kirby against his greatest nemesis to date: himself. Up to four players can battle it out in local or online matches, using abilities from Kirby’s storied past to thwart each other. An official announcement video uploaded after the Nintendo Direct confirmed ten different game modes, with more details forthcoming.
Counting main series titles, Virtual Console re-releases, and appearances in games like Super Smash Bros., Battle Royale is Kirby’s 18th appearance on the Nintendo 3DS. Don’t let his youthful glow fool you: this year marks the 25th anniversary of Kirby’s arrival, and with another main series title announced for the Switch (release and official title TBD), we can expect to see more of him in the future.
In commemoration of Battle Royale’s launch, Nintendo is conducting a poll to find which of Kirby’s many in-game abilities are most popular among players. Over fifty of Kirby’s Copy Abilities are available, the winner of which will be inspire a wallpaper and theme for the Nintendo 3DS. The Copy Ability with the most votes might also make an appearance in the game itself, though the site does stipulate that some Abilities up for voting are already in the title – and, oddly, some cannot be added. Players can vote once per day until 2 October, 2017.
Kirby Battle Royale is due for release on 19 January, 2018.
