Microsoft Officially Unplugs the Kinect

According to a report from Co.Design, Microsoft is no longer manufacturing the Kinect sensor, which in Layman’s terms means the Kinect is officially dead.

The Kinect first found homes on our TV sets back in 2010 on the Xbox 360 and quickly became the fastest-selling consumer electronics device. Unfortunately that success wasn’t reignited when Microsoft bundled the new sensor with the Xbox One.

Since then, the Kinect has been slowly dying as many people weren’t too chuffed that they had to pay more for the console likely forcing them towards the PlayStation 4 – which is currently the best selling current-gen console.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom as Microsoft quickly realised that the Kinect was dead weight and un-bunbled the two offering the Xbox One at a much cheaper price. Then came the Xbox One S, a slimmer version of the Xbox One which came with no Kinect port. Those who wanted a Kinect had to then purchase an optional adapter for the sensor to work.

Then the time came. The Kinect is now “out of stock” on the Microsoft Store, and the sensor is no longer being manufactured. But that’s not a big deal for Microsoft at the moment who seem to have more of a focus on Mixed Reality.

RIP Kinect. We hardly knew you.
