New Trailer for Shadow Of The Colossus Remastered Released

Sony’s upcoming remastered edition of Shadow of the Colossus just had a new trailer released at Sony’s Paris Games Week festival.

For our younger readers out there who were just wee twinkles in the post man’s eye in 2005, Shadow of the Colossus was an action-adventure game made by Team Ico, and is one of the most well received titles of all time. The game follows an unnamed protagonist as he explores a distant, uninhabited landscape, slaying huge monsters in an attempt to resurrect his dead girlfriend. The game is very reserved and minimalist, both in terms of story and gameplay. The setting is truly beautiful, and you truly feel the urge to explore this empty world. The only combat in the game is the boss fights against the enormous monsters that roam the land, but what boss fights they are!

One of the main mechanics is climbing, as you usually have to latch on to the leviathans and pull your way up to their weak spots, all the while watching your limited grip gauge. This allows you to fully see each part of the bosses’ incredible design. The game truly feels like a work of art, something rare in this age of “Slaughter of Honour 6: Generic WW2 Shooter:Day 1 DLC Edition” where you need a Season Pass just to play half the bloody game!

So, what’s new in this updated version? Well, it looks prettier. And…. it looks prettier. To be honest, while I would normally call such a minor update as laziness on Sony’s part, in this case I think it is a good move. Shadow of the Colossus is a classic that does not really need any changes. ‘Why bother buying this new version then?’ I hear you cry amongst the many voices in my head. Well, a big part of the appeal of the game is just how beautiful it is, and despite that the PS2 era graphics are really starting to feel their age. Being released in pretty modern graphics is a good move, and should please us snobby fans of the original.

As for this new trailer, it doesn’t give to much away. It shows one of the best monster battles in the game, that being the huge flying sand serpent beast. The new graphics do look very impressive and just watching the classic gameplay brought a lovely feeling of nostalgia. I wish I hadn’t sold my PS2 for crack when I lost my savings in the 2008 financial crash…
