In an interview with IGN Game Freak director, Shigeru Ohmori said the upcoming Ultra Sun & Moon will be the 3DS’ last Pokémon games.
Speaking about it he said “When we were making Pokemon X and Y, we really were trying to push the 3DS system to its absolute limits…” and “With Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon we’ve tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits, and we’re now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out. So we’re really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system.”
You can’t really blame them can you? The 3DS line of handhelds has been out for almost 7 years now and it’s already seen 2 new Pokémon generations as well as a remake of Generation 3. There’s no doubt that Sun and Moon pushed the console to its limits. Once Game Freak started using 3D models instead of sprites the hardware could barely handle it, with frame rates dipping well below 30fps even in one on one battles. Clearly the Pokémon games are more demanding. How lucky for us fans then that Game Freak is going to be moving its focus onto the Switch.
At E3 this year it was announced that a “core” Pokémon game will be coming to the Switch. No details were given except that it won’t be out until 2018 but hey, that’s not far off now. This will mark the first time a mainline Pokémon game has come to a home console and I for one can’t wait to see what Game Freak does with it.
For now though fans will have to be patient and tide themselves over with the upcoming Ultra Sun and Moon which will be releasing for Nintendo 3DS on November 17.
