Telltale Restructures, Cuts 90 Staff

Telltale issued a press release recently stated they’re going to be cutting a lot of their staff in a company wide restructure. They’ll be letting go of 90 people, or roughly 25% of their staff.

They stated that they want to “make the company more competitive as a developer and publisher of groundbreaking story-driven gaming experiences with an emphasis on high quality in the years ahead,” adding that “Our industry has shifted in tremendous ways over the past few years. The realities of the environment we face moving forward demand we evolve, as well, reorienting our organization with a focus on delivering fewer, better games with a smaller team.”

It sounds like they want to take a more focused approach to games development. Making fewer games would allow them to really concentrate on polishing them and making them as best they can, rather than pushing them out rough and quick like they have been doing recently.

To allay any fears that a smaller team would mean lower quality they said they’ll be making use of “more proven technologies that will fast-track innovation in its core products as it works with new partners to bring its games to new audiences.”

Telltale has been planning big changes and as Job Stauffer said they may be a fundamentally different company in the coming years. Still it remains to be seen how such a cut will affect their work but with their level of expertise I think it’s safe to say they’ll continue to produce high quality adventure games.
