Yesterday saw the second live stream from Bungie regarding the rapidly approaching DLC for [amazon_textlink asin=’B0747P2FTC’ text=’Destiny 2‘ template=’ProductLink’ store=’n3rdabl3-21′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’dd885449-cf97-11e7-ac67-1f6e0cf5d909′]. From the looks of things, Bungie has doubled down on everything that has made Destiny 2 incredible.
For starters, Dan Miller, Destiny 2‘s Game Director, teased the new Public Event on Mercury, which will supposedly be the largest Public Event TO DATE. And like any good MMORPG the bigger the events, the bigger the rewards! Players will need to take down Gate Keepers, which will be the focal point of the event. Once slain, the Keepers will drop keys. These keys will then be used as a means of progression through the rest of the event. What is interesting is the use of islands that will only appear during this event. These islands will be a way for players to access parts of the environment that can’t generally be accessed while you’re patrolling. Don’t have a fireteam?? Fret not young Guardian, Destiny 2 will bring you into contact with other players to help you complete the event. NO ONE gets left behind!
As we all know, the Lighthouse will be available to the public this time around, however, significant changes have been made to the new social space. ‘The Forge’ will be a way for players to create “end game” weapons and track their progress while they assemble them. Aside from that, mysterious puzzles will be throughout the Lighthouse for players to solve, and of course, Brother Vance will be there to guide players through a series of new Adventures which will be the main way for players to explore the new planet.
Not enough content for you die hards? Not to worry! ‘Heroic Adventures’ will be available for guardians who want a new challenge. Modifiers will be applied every time you play, making each play through of the adventure a unique experience. On top of that, ‘Story Strikes’ will also be available. These new Strikes aim to change the player experience by giving more Strikes to play through while simultaneously telling the players more about the campaign.
Finally, lets talk about the Infinite Forest. From what we saw from the Destiny 2 live stream last night, this could potentially be one of the coolest additions to Destiny so far. In an attempt to be prepared for every possible situation, the Vex created a virtual “forest” which shows different iterations of the past, present and future. By doing this, it let them be more prepared to counter every happening to ensure they come out victorious.
Lore aside, the art team at Bungie put some serious work into this new area. In a way it’s a controlled take of procedural generation. Basically, with procedurally generated areas, there is a chance for some not so pleasant things to happen. Poor combinations of game assets can potentially lead to some frustrating gameplay. In an attempt to avoid that, the team at Bungie created numerous assets that are all appealing and fit together. However, the way they all appear will always be random. So basically, you have platforming areas that will always change but never in a way that Bungie didn’t intend for them to play out. Well played Bungie, well played.
After each of these sections in Destiny 2, players will activate a tree and then be transported to one of the three time lines; past, present, or future to finish the area. While not like the Infinite Forest, each of these zones have been meticulously hand crafted. To get to these areas, Guardians will need to kill “demons” which will then unlock the gate to access one of the three zones. The Infinite Forest is a path to reach one of these end caps. While they are not randomized, the enemy encounters will be, ensuring different experiences every time.
From everything we saw last night, this first DLC is shaping up to be a promising addition to an already great game. Thankfully we won’t have to wait much longer to find out, Curse of Osiris drops everywhere December 5!
