Another week goes by, another clip from the upcoming Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle comes out. This time, the video is a featurette with interviews from the main cast members, including Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian and Jack Black.
So, here’s a quick recap if you couldn’t be bothered to check out those links (you meany!): Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a sequel to the classic 1995 film starring Robin Williams that everyone loved. The formula is being mixed up a bit, as this time the reality warping game Jumanji has not manifested as an old early 1900s board game, but as an early 1980s video game console. Once our teenage heroes play the game, they are sucked into a new world that resembles Far Cry but without as many drugs. The protagonists have also turned into the overpaid actors mentioned above.
The film looks like it could be quite a laugh, with humour stemming from various video game tropes, for example the main characters all have three lives in the game, and, of course, through the body swapping premise. There is also bound to be a lot of fairly decent action too (it does have the Rock in it, after all), so it might be worth a watch. Will it live up to the original? Probably not. The film doesn’t seem to be aiming for that same magical quality the original had, and of course with the wonderful Robin Williams being… err… permanently contractually unavailable, it is unlikely that they would ever be able to recapture it.
So, what does this new featurette give us? Not too much sadly. We see some glimpses of behind the scenes footage, but it is mostly what we have seen before. All the interview segments are the usual affair from before a movie comes out, where the actors put on their most Oscar worthy performances and pretend like they are working on the greatest film ever. I wonder when this tactic ever works; who out there will look at this clip and think ‘The Doctor’s ex-girlfriend says this film looks great, I’m going to go see it!’?
Anyway, check it out if you are interested, you might gain a bit more of an insight into the film. If you’re not interested, why are you still reading this article? Go outside and chase a hoop down a dusty road.
