According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Mario is set to be making his way to the big screen once more as Illumination Entertainment set to close a deal with Nintendo.
For those who don’t know, Illumination Entertainment is the production company behind everyone’s favourite gibberish-speaking yellow blobs: The Minions, and their feature films Despicable Me. This deal, according to the report, will have Illumination going ahead with creating an animated film based on Super Mario.
Illumination has been in talks with Nintendo for nearly a year now with Nintendo remaining pretty headstrong about being heavily involved in the creation process. The report also adds that Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto will possibly be the producer behind the flick.
Over the past couple of years Nintendo have been spreading their wings somewhat by letting their IP have a little more freedom in terms of appearing on other platforms and even in other video games. First we had Super Mario Run on mobile, then Super Mario and Rabbids coming together. There’s also a Nintendo-themed attractions in the works over at Universal.
Here’s hoping, if true, Super Mario can break the curse of video game adaptations.
