Avengers: Infinity War – What Are The “Infinity Stones”

Since Marvel first released Iron Man back in 2008 they have repeatedly said that “it’s all connected”. Through dozens of films spanning a decade of awesomeness, we have seen some of Marvel’s most incredible characters come to life on the big screen. Behind it all though, there has been one binding factor, a driving force that unifies all of these films that span continents and galaxies, The Infinity Stones.

So what exactly ARE these precious stones that have started wars and caught the eye of some of the most powerful beings in the universe? To this point, we have seen these stones make their own appearances in movies like Thor, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy and so on. However, it hasn’t really been made clear to our heroes that these stones serve a higher purpose. They know they’re capable of world ending power (on their own) and that the bad guys can’t get them by any means necessary.

“Before creation itself, there were six singularities, then the universe exploded into existence and the remnants of this system were forged into concentrated ingots… Infinity Stones.” – The Collector (Benicio Del Toro)

That is the best explanation we get out of the first 11 films. The Big Bang happened and these “otherworldly” powers that shouldn’t and don’t belong anywhere else in the universe are compacted into 6 colorful stones. Each stone possesses it’s own unique power and name: Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Soul, and Time.

Now I know what you’re thinking “But.. I don’t remember a Soul stone in any of the movies??”, and you wouldn’t be wrong, that is the only one we have yet to see get it’s big-screen debut.

This time however, he succeeds, placing each gem in his Infinity Gauntlet, and wiping out half the population of the universe. He then gets his ass beat again by a group of avenging superheros across a number of various comic issues.

It is VERY important to note here that in BOTH instances, Adam Warlock played a crucial role in Thanos’ demise. For whatever reason we have yet to see him in the movies though, we only heard mention of him in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to be precise. But I won’t jump down that rabbit hole in this article. It is also worth mentioning that elements of Adam Warlock have been applied elsewhere throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, more specifically, the wielding of an Infinity Stone on his head, has been applied to the film version of The Vision. Hmmm intriguing.

What Infinity Stones have we seen so far?

So lets go back to the beginning.

The Tesseract (Space Stone)

We first saw this stone in Captain America and then The Avengers, used by Red Skull and then Loki respectively. The Tesseract, if you can remember that far back, is the blue cube capable of teleporting anything or anyone from one point in the universe to the other. The other use is apparently to create futuristic weapons… but wait! What if all those blue laser beams aren’t killing what they hit but just teleporting what they hit to other parts of the universe? Or even other movies?! Toy Story meets Avengers anyone? Anyway, we last saw this stone being brought back to Thor’s homeworld of Asgard at the end of The Avengers.

Aether (Reality Stone)

The Aether is the red floating liquid stuff from Thor: The Dark World, you know, the stuff that latches onto a host and makes them stronger? In the comics, it has more of a focus on wish fulfillment. In the MCU though it was only ever seen in this on movie. Natalie Portman’s character had it and then the mean dark elf guy contracted it from her like a bad case of herpes…

By the end of the film though it was given to the Collector for safety reasons, but his house and collection got blown the fuck up in Guardians of the Galaxy so I’m really not sure where that shit went. Hmm PLOT HOLES!

Orb (Power Stone)

Speaking of the Collector’s house and Collection getting blown to shit, the Power stone is the one responsible for that back in Guardians of the Galaxy. This purple stone grants it’s wielder immense power, super human strength and beams of purple destruction to be more specific. It is more than capable of wiping out entire planets and everything on them by just touching the surface. By the end of Guardians, the Power Stone was being contained by the Nova Corps.

Loki’s Sceptre/ Vision’s Dome Piece (Mind Stone)

Originally in Loki’s sceptre, which explains why he could control people like puppets, the Mind Stone now resides safely in the Vision’s forehead, laid bare for the universe to see, someones confident.. Anyway, as I just stated, the mind stone lets the user control people’s minds, go figure. It also turned Jarvis into Paul Bettany! But I think Marvel took some creative freedoms there.

The Eye of Agamotto (Time Stone)

Featured prominently in Doctor Strange, the Time Stone lets its user control time.. again, go figure. In the movie it was referred to as the “Eye of Agamotto” but they’re not fooling anyone, we know better! Doctor Strange used the Time Stone to trap Dormammu in an endless loop with himself until he finally submitted to the Doctor and agreed to leave Earth alone, for now. Earth’s first sorcerer supreme, Agamotto, had bound the stone to a pendant thousands of years before, high in the mountains of Kamar-Taj in Nepal. As far as we know, its still resides there seeing as how that is where Doctor Strange left off.

And lastly..

The Soul Stone

Yet to make it’s theatrical debut, the Soul Stone in the comics was a sentient being that could trap souls within another world. However, the concept of “souls” has yet to be truly explored within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is open to interpretation how it will be revealed in the movies. Seeing as how we only have Black Panther standing in between us and Infinity War Part 1, it is plausible we will (hopefully) see it then.

Fun fact: The Infinity Stones weren’t the same colors in the comics as they are on the big screen. AND in the comics there were even MORE stones than these 6, because they’re Marvel and they can do what they want! That’s why!

But I digress…

OK so we know where the stones are now (minus one) and we know what they all do, so what now?? Well Thanos needs to collect them and imbued his gauntlet with the power of the stones. From the trailer released, we know for sure he has the Space and Power Stones.

Avengers: Infinity War – What Are The “Infinity Stones”

Another fun fact? ONE Infinity Stone makes the wielder have “the power of a God”! *gasp* So really anything more than that is just overkill.

Another another fun fact?! There are actually TWO gauntlets!! The one can be seen very very briefly in Thor, in the collection room below the throne room and it looks to have fake stones inset in it for show, because who just wants to look at a plain gold gauntlet? BORING. Then of course the other is in Thanos’ possession, as shown above.

So there you have it, we’re one step closer to being all caught up! Be sure to keep an eye out for our next installment where we dive into just who exactly this pissed off purple dude is. Who IS Thanos?!
