Avengers: Infinity War – Who is Thanos (a.k.a. The Mad Titan)?

The Mad Titan is coming..

After diving into the Black Order and the origins of the Infinity Stones, it’s only fitting that we explore the man behind the curtain, the puppet master, Thanos himself.

The Eternals were a civilization that lived on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. Thanos was born… different. He was not as attractive as the other Eternals, like his brother Starfox, and was monstrous compared to others. Because of this, the soon to be known ‘Mad Titan’ grew into a brooding, depressed individual obsessed with Death.

The thing is, he wasn’t just obsessed with Death, he was consumed by it. In the series Thanos Rising, we see a young Thanos vivisect his own mother in a desperate attempt to discover how someone so consumed with death, like himself, could even come into being. For those unfamiliar with the term, her took his mother’s insides and made them her outsides.

More than anyone else, Thanos sought personal power and strength. He endowed himself with cybernetic enhancements until he was the most powerful being on Titan. It’s unclear what the deciding factor was, but eventually Thanos was exiled from his own people. Some say it’s because he created the first weapon on Titan, but my money is on the fact he dissected his own mother.

Yeah… shit’s messed up

After his exile, Thanos began to explore the universe. During his travels he actually encountered Death itself, or herself? She appeared to him in the form of a female, and Thanos became infatuated with her. From that moment on, his sole purpose was to be considered worthy of death. It’s important to note, while death is in fact and actual “being” in Marvel, the majority of the interactions between them are in his head, hence the name “Mad Titan”.

As an eternal he possesses superhuman physiology meaning he has pretty much superhuman everything. Strength, endurance, reflexes, agility, etc. His skin is nearly impenetrable, especially against the elements like heat, cold, electricity, toxins, radiation, aging and disease.. just to name a few. He can go without food or water indefinitely, and this was all before Death “cursed” him with immortality. On top of that his mind is invulnerable to most forms of psychic attacks and he can project psionic blasts of energy as well as plasma and cosmic blasts from his eyes and hands.. put simply, he can shoot lasers from his head and hands. So put an army behind this dude and yea, planets are going to fall to his rule, which is pretty much what happens. Starting with his home world, Titan, he raised countless planets, declaring himself ruler over anyone that survived.

So that pretty much catches us up on WHO Thanos is. In terms of how this all relates to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, well it is yet to be seen. We know Thanos is after the Infinity Stones, we know he has the Gauntlet, and we know Earth is in his sights. What we don’t know is how much of his backstory will be invovled, if any, and how his character from the comics will translate to the big screen. But hey, at least you can go into Infinity War with some understanding of what the Avengers will be up against.
