With many fantastic games launching this year you could say the decision to crown a single game “Game of the Year” is a pretty difficult one. Then again, Nintendo kind of surprised all of us with the Nintendo Switch and the games which have launched it.
So with that in mind, it comes as no surprise that we’ve crowned this year’s n3rdabl3 Game of the Year; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild offered players a brand new Zelda experience like no other. First, it made the most of Nintendo’s new hardware, The Nintendo Switch, and second, it offered an open world for players to explore – all in the palms of their hands. Not only that, the adventure was vast and players could attempt it at their own pace.
This game brought classic Zelda gameplay to the modern age, throwing away classic health regeneration (I.E. collecting heart pieces) for something more familiar to those who play role playing games – using food as a resource to gain health. What this game showed was that Nintendo, an arguably old-fashioned company, is finally making its 21st century debut.
Saying that though, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was also accessible to those who don’t necessarily play RPGs that often. The bright colour palette, the control scheme, and mechanics are all welcoming to new and old.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hits every nail on the head, it’s a familiar IP that’s evolved enough to become fresh and new. To new players, it’s easily accessible, and it makes the most of Nintendo’s new system which everyone has fallen in love with.
So it comes as no surprise that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is n3rdabl3’s Game of the Year 2017.
