Netflix have decided to renew Marvel’s The Punisher for a second series, despite it receiving a mixed response and some minor controversy.
The Punisher follows Frank Castle, the gun-wielding, war-veteran vigilante who, unlike most superheroes, murders his way through the criminal underworld. This new incarnation of the character played by Jon Bernthal first appeared in the other Netflix Marvel series Daredevil before getting his own solo series.
The Punisher received a lukewarm reception upon release, something becoming more and more common with Marvel’s different Netflix shows, with most complaining about the unpleasant tone and slower pace. Some complained about the prevalence of gun violence in the show, considering the current social and political climate in the United States. Still, Bernthal’s performance and the complex writing seem to have won over most fans, and made it popular enough to get it renewed.
This is not the first time The Punisher has had an adaptation made, with the character having been played by Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson in film over the last 30 years. These movies have failed to do justice to The Punisher, but it seems that Bernthal’s version has managed to do just that. Let’s hope it continues and the next series is even stronger than the first.
