Tomb Raider publisher Square Enix announced ahead of The Game Awards yesterday evening that a new entry into the series is coming in 2018.
In a tweet posted by the publisher, they wrote that “A new Tomb Raider is coming” and that their “journey together will begin with a major event in 2018,” presumably E3 2018. What’s interesting however is that Square Enix failed to actually mention any name for the game despite many rumours suggesting the next entry would be Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Interestingly, the reason for Square’s silence may be due to the way they’re handling the game, as they’re “taking a new approach this time” with its roll out. Basically, the new Tomb Raider is going to be announced and soon after players will be able to play it. Much like the way Betheasda handled the announcement and subsequent launch of Fallout 4.
Another interesting detail is the “secret” which Square Enix managed to sneak into the announcement. Just look at the first letter of each sentence:

SHADOW. That’s right. Despite actually announcing any details, they may have just hinted at the name of the game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which we’ve known for some time thanks to many leaks. Another point to note is that the announcement doesn’t confirm who’ll be developing the game.
Crystal Dynamics, who handled the first two games, is currently hard at work developing The Avengers video game which comes as part of a new partnership between Square Enix and Marvel. Earlier leaks did suggest that Deus Ex and Thief developer Eidos Montreal would be handling this entry, though we still have no confirmation on this.
I guess we’ll find out more about Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018.
