Nintendo’s smash hit fighting game crossover series is making its way to the Switch at last. In this week’s Nintendo Direct we were treated to a short trailer and a release date.
The trailer begins with the squid kids from Splatoon running around and jumping through ink like they do. Then all of a sudden the screen goes dark and in the squid kid’s eye we see reflected the Smash Bros. logo. As he turns around we see a bunch of characters in silhouette in front of the fiery logo. Most notable here is the close up we get of Link, who appears to be Link from Breath of the Wild.
After that we get told that Super Smash Bros. will be releasing in 2018. However, what remains to be seen is whether this is a brand new entry in the series or a port of the version that was on 3DS and Switch. The Switch has been out for a whole year now and it’s been nearly four years since the release of Smash 4 but then again a large number of releases on the Switch have been ports of games from the last generation.
At the moment, there’s just no way to know. I’m optimistic that it’s a brand new entry and personally I can’t wait to see what improvements and new characters it brings to the series.
