Valve has announced that it’ll be releasing a Steam Link app onto Android and iOS that’ll allow players to play PC games on their phones and tablets.
In a press release Valve announced that two new apps will be coming to mobile: Steam Link and Steam Video. The first, similar to their Steam Link hardware, will allow players to stream their PC games onto their phones and tablets. This app will be launching on May 21.
Interestingly, Steam Link will only work if players can connect to a 5Ghz network or wired Ethernet to Mac or PC, this is likely due to 5Ghz and Wired offering a more stable, faster connection for streaming PC games. Once connected players can then stream content to mobile, tablet, TV, or Apple TV.
As for the Steam Video app, this will be launching this summer and will allow users to stream movies and shows available on Steam through to their Android or iOS device over both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
This is definitely a move in the right direction as being able to take your PC games away from the desk, as it were, is a great idea. It’ll be interesting to see what peripherals are compatible with the Steam Link app or whether it offers touch screen controls.
