Announced at E3 2018, Jump Force teased Death Note’s Light Yagami and Ryuk right at the end of trailer, to a decent pop. But to the dismay of a lot of Anime and Manga fans, Producer Koji Nakajima has stated that Ryuk would “be too strong.”
“Ryuk from Death Note isn’t a playable character,” Nakajima confirmed in an interview with Siliconera, and he did make a fair point, “because if he writes names into the Death Note, people die, right? He’d be too strong.” Although fans will be disappointed that Ryuk won’t be playable, it would probably be worse to have a character randomly die because their name ended up written down.
The characters from Death Note will play a part in how the manga characters have appeared in our world.
“The background of the story is that the real world and Jump’s world is merging together for unknown reasons, and the heroes need to stop this from happening. The Death Note characters have to do with this background, which also means they will show up in the story.”
Clothing damage was also mentioned by Nakajima, as with most “battle mangas” characters tend to end up a little worse for wear. Having clothing damage seems like a subtle little feature that will be only heighten the game graphically.
Jump Force is due to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2019, though no solid release date has been announced as of yet.
