Square Enix Montreal has revealed that their spin-off ‘GO’ series, which spawned titles like Hitman GO and Lara Croft GO, has come to an end.
The ‘GO’ series of games were fantastic diorama-style spin-offs of some of Square Enix’ more popular IPs. Hitman GO began the series offering an interesting spin on the Hitman mechanics as players moved around the little Agent 47 puzzle piece across the map. Following this, Square Enix launched Lara Croft GO and finally, Deus Ex GO.
For anyone hoping to see another Lara Croft GO or Hitman GO, or even a Just Cause GO, they might be disappointed to hear that the series has come to an end.
“I have to say no [we’re not working on other Go games], I’m sorry,” Patrick Naud told PC Games Insider (via PocketGamer). “The Go series was a great adventure for us as a studio. We’ve done the three games, we’ve seen the wind. The hardest element is making premium games on mobile.
“It’s one of the challenges we have today is the premium mobile market is diminishing,” he added “You’ve got more and more high-quality free titles, so there are even fewer and fewer people inclined to try something that will not be free.”
It’s a real shame because those games are truly fantastic and are worth the premium price points, though with the mobile market being dominated by so many free-to-play, microtransaction and ad-supported titles, this decision makes a lot of sense.
