While Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was announced last November, developer Niantic has stated that they can’t say if it will be released this year.
At the time of the announcement, Niantic did everything possible to not confirm a 2018 launch window, stating that “more details about Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be released in 2018”.
As we’re getting further through the year with the Summer heat in full effect and Pokémon Go having it’s next few months planned, it’s strange that we’ve not heard anything to do with Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Niantic Labs’ CEO John Hanke stated “We want to realize it when the game’s ready… We want to avoid a death march where the game releases on a specific date no matter what.”
Unfortunately, Hanke was particularly coy when asked if Harry Potter: Wizards Unite could be releasing next year, simply responding with “Mmhmm”.
Whether we actually get to see Harry Potter: Wizards Unite anytime soon is anyone’s guess. While Niantic might be holding the game back so that it doesn’t affect how well the new Pokémon Go content, they seem keen to make it clear that the games won’t be at risk of cannibalizing each other.
“We want to put different options out there and let players decide how to spend their time. Harry Potter has an immense global fanbase – the numbers we’ve seen are pretty amazing.”
Hanke concluded with, “The point is, I feel like there’s enough Harry Potter fans out there that even if no Pokémon Go players decide to play Harry Potter – which I don’t think would be true – it doesn’t have to take any time or players away to be successful.”
I, for one, can’t wait for the release of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. The prospect of seeing people running around with broomsticks, wands, and robes is too much and I’ll be busting out my Sirius Black wand with them.
