It’s no new news that Square Enix’s latest JRPG, Octopath Traveler is a smash hit. So much so that they recently had to apologize for not having enough physical copies for game retailers! However, there is one character out of the 8 that is giving fans a bit of a hard time…
Octopath Traveler‘s H’aanit tends to use “middle English” when she talks, and unless you went through school reading Shakespearean plays, you might feel a bit lost. In fact, players are probably feeling like they’re back in high school taking turns reading lines from Macbeth.
H’aanit is the huntress of Octopath Traveler, one of eight protagonists that you can either start with or add to your party later. She’s a beast when it comes to using a bow, and she seems like a compassionate person; it’s not that fans are upset with the character she is… But holy shit when she opens her mouth your eyes could quite possibly glaze over.
The way she speaks is SO bad, that native English speakers and non-natives alike are having an issue understanding just what the fuck she’s saying. For example, in places like China, where the game wasn’t relocalized, non-native English speakers are finding H’aanit’s dialogue borderline incomprehensible.
So much so that China-based “Chinese Nintendo” Twitter account has stated that college students have started referring to H’annit as the “TEM-8 Traveler.” Being that most of us probably don’t know what that reference means, I’ll clarify. The joke refers to a college-level exam for English Majors that is apparently extremely hard to pass and it can only be taken ONCE. So if you fail, you’re out of luck. Thank god I didn’t go to college in China. What I’m getting at is H’aanit’s dialogue can be THAT perplexing for some fans.
While H’aanit’s way of speaking might be difficult to comprehend, it’s apparently brought players together. Now, players can laugh, or cry, about her confusing way of speaking together… So, it’s not all bad I suppose. Yay friendship.
