As part of a deal announced today, the inaugural Overwatch League playoffs will be broadcast on Disney’s network of channels, including ESPN, Disney XD, and ABC. This all kicks off now, with playoff rounds, and is set to continue through to the Grand Finals, broadcast from the Barclays Center in New York July 27-28.
Overwatch League will air on ESPN and Disney XD, as well as their appropriate mobile channels, in the form of the ESPN App and Disney Now. A “recap show” will be broadcast on ABC in primetime July 29, which marks the first time an esports championship will be shown in primetime on ABC.
Disney and ESPN executive Justin Connolly said the following regarding the deal with Overwatch League:
“This overall collaboration with Disney/ABC, ESPN and Blizzard represents our continued commitment to esports, and we look forward to providing marquee Overwatch League coverage across our television platforms for fans”
It is worth noting that this new deal has no effect on the deal between Blizzard and Twitch for Overwatch League coverage. We look forward to seeing just what this new collaboration brings to the table going forward.
