Arkane Studios has revealed that they’re not planning to make another Dishonored title and that the series is resting.
“I can’t say definitively what might happen down the road, anything could happen, but Dishonored is resting for now,” said Arkane Studios Lead Designer Ricardo Bare in an interview with VG247.
With the release of Arkane’s Death of the Outsider in September 2017, the story of Corvo, Dunwall, and the Outsider has come to a close. That doesn’t mean that Dishonored is done for good, just that for the time being the studio is looking into other, fresher experiences to deliver.
“The things that are important to us as a studio are coherent, deep world building and environmental storytelling – we’re always going to craft spaces that you feel like you’re visiting, whether it’s Dunwall or Talos 1. It’s just as important a character as the player or the people you meet. Then it’s improvisational gameplay–giving players a bunch of cool abilities and tools, then saying, ‘You figure it out, you be creative, you own the experience.'”
Arkane has always kept their focus on delivering deep, immersive, fleshed out worlds. So while Dishonored is taking a break, giving us a new series with similar world building and characters might not be such a bad thing. If there is one thing they know how to do, it’s crafting a living, breathing game worlds for us to explore and fall in love with.
While Bare failed to mention what Arkane Studios was developing next, he did hint that including more multiplayer experiences is something they are certainly interested in. “Being able to incorporate more online sharing or multiplayer type stuff, we totally might do that.” There was also a tease of what form their next game could take, and how it may be departing from the first person experiences they’ve grown so accustomed to crafting.
Arkane also recently released a new, free expansion for their other newest title, Prey, called Mooncrash. On top of that, they will also be releasing a hide-and-seek game mode called Typhon Hunter which will drop later this year.
