The indie hit Sunless Sea is now available on PS4, letting a whole new market of gamers experience the joy of building up a crew of misfits and then eating them.
Sunless Sea: Zubmariner Edition (as the PlayStation version is called) also includes the game’s expansion pack, Zubmariner. Sunless Sea is set in the ‘Fallen London’ universe, a parallel world in which Victorian London fell into a great cave under the Earth, populated by strange horrors and mystical properties.
You play as a captain sailing the Unterzee, the great underground ocean. Your name, appearance, and even goal are entirely customizable; will you try to discover what happened to your father lost at sea, discover all there is to know in the Unterzee or just try to make your fortune trading your wares? It is entirely up to you.
The game is a fun blend of narrative and action, as you try to discover new settlements in an ever-changing underworld and have to battle against monsters and other vessels. It is also very heavily inspired by the roguelikes of yore, and as such, it is very tough and there is no save function. The game encourages you to experiment and fail, so expect to watch many of your captains starve to death or get eaten by enormous eels.
You can get Sunless Sea on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, or on Steam.
