The Meg has exceeded all expectations in the box office this weekend, ranking $44 million domestically and another $97 million overseas.
The Meg seemed like a joke when it was first announced, like Jaws on speed, but apparently this weekend everyone wanted a piece of Jason Statham and a giant-ass shark. Seriously, that’s a hell of a lot of money for a movie which is essentially a more “serious” Sharknado.
The movie, according to Box Office Mojo, has become the biggest grossing movie in North America, surpassing Mission Impossible: Fallout’s third weekend. It’s also Warner Bros.; the best weekend debut of the year so far, outselling the likes of Ready Player One and Oceans 8.
Simply put, everyone wants to see a movie about a giant fucking shark.
This put’s the weekend’s US Box Office charts as follows:
- The MEG
- Mission Impossible: Fallout
- Disney’s Christopher Robin
- The Spy Who Dumped Me
- Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
- The Equalizer 2
- Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
- Ant-Man and the Wasp
The Meg is available in theatres now.
