Gambit, a fan-favorite from the X-Men animated series, is set to be the star of his own movie in the ever-expanding MCU, with a portrayal by Channing Tatum. Although the project has been delayed a number of times, those at the helm are still trying to develop the film and make it unique.
In an interview, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg alluded to the possibility that Gambit’s personality could be well-suited for a “romantic comedy.”
“I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are,” Kinberg clarified.
While the movie may not be a straightforward romantic comedy or a straightforward superhero film, the unorthodox approach being taken by Marvel has proven successful in a number of other projects, most notably Deadpool (2016) and Logan (2017). And with a couple other unorthodox X-Men properties on the horizon, such as X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, it seems to be the perfect time to modify the formula slightly.
Having been a franchise since before the MCU was established, the X-Men movies have had the time to test the waters and experiment with what makes a quality superhero film. Gambit is set to uphold the tradition of implementing innovative approaches by injecting elements of romantic comedy into the mix. That is if the project is fortunate enough to get off the ground anytime soon.
