Who needs a Virtual Console? The Sega Ages series is becoming an impressive way to archive the SEGA classics of yesteryear!

SEGA has released much of their archives previously, so what makes the AGES line any different from their previous goes? Each title is being perfectly ported with a few deep optional tweaks. So far we have had recent reissues of Sonic the Hedgehog (MegaDrive) & Thunder Force IV (MegaDrive) but there is unsurprisingly many more titles yet to come.

SEGA AGES Confirmed Titles

  • Phantasy Star (Master System)
  • Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Master System)
  • Gain Ground (Arcade)
  • Space Harrier (Arcade)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (MegaDrive)
  • Columns II (Arcade)
  • OutRun (Arcade)
  • Thunder Force AC (Arcade)
  • Virtua Racing (Arcade)

There is nothing too spectacular that hasn’t been rereleased a million times before except Virtua Racing which is not only the first 3D SEGA AGES title but also confirmed to be the first true arcade-accurate port of the groundbreaking title never before released outside of arcades.

SEGA Virtua Racing

Earlier this month SEGA put out a Twitter poll asking fans what they want from the line and results are in. There are some disappointing omissions (Seaman & Crazy Taxi?) but otherwise, the Nintendo Switch is looking to become the new home for SEGA and their ravenous fans.

For those that are not fluent in Japanese here’s a translation of the results (note Virtua Racing had not been confirmed when the poll was released):

  1. Jet Set Radio
  2. Shenmue (I & II)
  3. Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG
  4. Virtua Fighter
  5. Shining RPG series
  6. Panzer Dragoon
  7. Sakura Wars
  8. Puyo Puyo
  9. Cyber Troopers Virtual-On
  10. Burning Ranger
  11. Skies of Arcadia
  12. NiGHTS Into Dreams…
  13. Golden Axe
  14. Mushiking: The King of Beetles

  25. Dragon Force
  26. Sega Rally
  27. Classic Phantasy Star
  28. Guardian Heroes
  29. Out Run 2
  30. Wing War

With Jet Set Radio topping the charts of most wanted an exciting future awaits future fans of SEGA’s past. From the looks of things, it should not be too long before we are all playing Daytona USA, Shenmue, and Panzer Dragoon on the Switch!
