With over ten years of content Marvel‘s Cinematic Universe has been riding a wave of success for over a decade. This success has spawned countless new television shows and spin-offs, some of the most popular offerings coming from the streaming giant, Netflix, with six different series spanning multiple seasons.
Sadly, Netflix now has one less show to work off of with its cancellation of Iron Fist. Needless to say, this cancellation has some fans feeling a bit wary about the future of Marvel’s television series, especially with Marvel supposedly transferring their series over to Disney’s own streaming service.
Thankfully though, it seems Marvel will be keeping their shows on Netflix for the time being. Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, discussed the cancellation of Iron Fist as well as the continuation of Marvel’s other Netflix series in a statement to The Insider.
“Those shows are for us to cancel and we’re super happy with their performance so far.”
This statement comes just days before Daredevil Season 3 is supposed to drop on Netflix, which has been Marvel’s gateway series into the streaming platform. Coincidence?! I think not! The second season of the Punisher has also finished filming with an expected release date most likely coming after Daredevil returns. Jessica Jones season 3 is also currently in some shade of production, and rumor has it that Luke Cage will be picked up for a third season. So, even though Iron Fist is no more, it seems like the rest of Marvel’s Netflix series is doing alright for now.
Iron Fist’s cancellation came as a surprise to some, with the first season being an absolute train wreck, things seemed hopefully coming off their second season, with a better overall reception and one hell of a cliffhanger. Disney and Netflix announced the series’ cancellation just last week, but hinted that Danny Rand and Colleen Wing could potentially appear elsewhere down the road.
“With every end is a new beginning,” Jones said. “I have an enormous amount of love and respect for everyone involved with the last two seasons of this show. Defending the greatest city in the world amongst the most talented and warmest people has been a privilege and a joy. Blessed to have taken this journey and grateful for the ongoing support.”
Daredevil Season 3 will drop on Netflix on Friday, October 19th.
