Sony has addressed and offered a fix for the massive PS4 message bug which has caused some players to factory reset their consoles in order to get them back in working order.
This weekend several reports came in of players who had received a cryptic message which, when it arrives, completely crashes their PS4 consoles requiring a factory reset for it to work again. This caused many reports to warn players to set their messages to Private in order to prevent this from happening again.
Now, Sony has reportedly found the source of the issue and in order to save a factory reset, players should enter safe mode and use “Option 5”:
We've since fixed the issue, and it wasn't bricking consoles, just sending them into a crash loop that can be quickly fixed in under 5 minutes. Delete the message on the PS mobile app, go into Safe Mode, use Option 5, console back to normal. ^DB

With no new firmware being released there’s a chance that the bug was with the PlayStation Network itself. We’ll update this post if Sony issues a further statement, however, rest assured that the issue seems to now be sorted.
