FIFA 19 hit store shelves last week and has already become the biggest video game of 2018, which comes as no real surprise, what is surprising, however, is the sharp drop in physical sales.
If there’s one thing I’ve spotted over the past couple of weeks is that physical sales for sequels have dropped significantly compared to their predecessors. Some might say it’s because these sequels were a bit shit, however, it seems that digital downloads are becoming a more common method of purchasing and playing games at launch.
FIFA 19 seems to be the strongest proof of this as sales are down 25% compared with FIFA 18 one year ago. It’s worth noting that Chart-Track doesn’t actually count digital sales (yet). Though again, the first scenario could be true, people could just be getting tired of FIFA.
With FIFA 19 landing at the top, last week’s number one, Spider-Man, falls down to second place and also becomes the second best selling game of the year, overtaking Far Cry 5 in four weeks. Shadow of the Tomb Raider also falls to third place. Despite a poor first week, its second week is pretty strong.
Another new release this week is Valkyria Chronicles 4 which lands in ninth place, followed by the Switch release of Dragon Ball Fighter Z which lands in twenty-ninth.
