Up and coming star Ella Jay Basco is currently in negotiations to play Cassandra Cain, according to Variety, which would land her in the last major role for the upcoming Harley Quinn spin-off, “Birds of Prey”.
Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn along with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bellon who’ll be playing Huntress and Black Canary respectively. Ewan McGregor will star as the film’s villain, Black Mask, and Rosie Perez will represent Gotham’s finest as police detective Renee Montoya.
You might recognize Basco’s Cassie Cain better as Batgirl. Cassandra is the daughter of Lady Shiva and David Cain, notorious assassins within the DC Universe. They deprive Cassie of speech and all human contact when she is a child as a means of conditioning her to become the world’s deadliest assassin. Eventually, she befriends Bruce Wayne and inevitably becomes Batgirl. However, it is unknown at this point if Basco’s Cain will receive the bat-makeover seeing that WB is already in the process of developing a Batgirl film.
The Birds of Prey film will see Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary team up to protect Cain after she discovers a diamond that belongs to Gotham’s Kingpin, Black Mask. Directing the upcoming film is Cathy Yan, with Margo Robbie producing alongside Bryan Unkeless and Sue Kroll.
This would mark the first major motion picture role for Basco. Prior to this casting, she appeared in guest spots for shows like “Veep”, “Superior Donuts”, and “Grey’s Antatomy”.
Birds of Prey is set to release worldwide on February 7, 2020!
