So I’m guessing we all remember the zombie survival phase the gaming industry went through, yes? Well from what was once an ARMA 2 mod, DayZ sprouted from its cocoon and to become a beautiful buggy butterfly we all call DayZ Standalone.
Well just five years after release we have a Beta! What? Yes, a whole five years later DayZ has only just hit Beta. Now, I know Rome wasn’t built in a day, but really?
DayZ has had a rocky development with broken promises, a metric fuck ton of bugs and a thinning player base, but the frequency of updates for a developer like Bohemia Interactive has been astonishing. How can a game take 5 years to come out of Beta? I speak for a lot of the community when I say that the game has hardly changed. Sure it’s better optimized, there are trucks now and you can wear a pumpkin! (Which is pretty cool) but what has changed?
Well, mod tools for one, are going to be a Godsend! The community has been saying for years that “Everything that is wrong with “DayZ can be fixed with mods”. Well guys, time to put your money where your mouths are.
Another exciting thing is base building, finally! ARMA 3: EXILE has it, ARMA 2 DayZ had it and now so does standalone. And not just an arrangement of tents and barrels this time either.
A few more details such as the ability to host your own servers and a map rework can be found here.
All in all, all progress is good progress. And who knows, maybe the zombie survival genre comes back in full swing? Maybe not so much, but anyway. It’s nice to see DayZ going somewhere.
