Thanks to their latest outing, the Spider-People of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse have *thwipped* their way in to the record books with the highest December opening for an animated feature, ever.

Grossing $35.4 million over its opening weekend in the US, Into The Spider-Verse easily claimed the top box-office spot over the three days; fending off competition from The Mule in second place with a distant $17.2 million. When combined with international revenue, the figures reach as high as $56.4 million for the web-head’s flick, meaning it is well on its way to turning a profit on its initial $90 million budget.

This stellar audience response follows massive critical acclaim (including from us here at!), indicating that
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse should not, in theory, suffer from the second-week income drop-off that cripples so many risky new properties.

Hopefully, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse‘s figures will tingle the spidey-sense of a few higher-ups at Sony, web-swinging them towards launching projects in a similar vein to this inventive, unique Spider-Verse movie.
