In light of the passing of Stephen Hillenburg, creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, dedicated fans began a petition to have the song “Sweet Victory,” which was featured in an episode of the show, performed at the next Super Bowl.
The was featured in the episode “Band Geeks,” in which Squidward lies about having a marching band in order to play the Bubble Bowl. Although Squidward suffers through everyone’s antics the week prior, Spongebob manages to bring everyone together and blow away everyone–Squidward and his rival included.
Besides the fact that this episode has received fantastic reception from critics and fans throughout the years (Tom Kenny, the voice of Spongebob, cites it as a favorite as well), the Bubble Bowl is a Super Bowl-style event. (The live-action clips of football fans is from a United States Football League game, not a past Super Bowl, however.)
At the time of this writing, there are just over 651,000 signatures on the petition, which you can check out here. Its original goal was 500,000 signatures, but now petition creator Israel Colunga has upped the count to 1,000,000.
To hold you over until Super Bowl LIII on February 3, you can check out the clip from the classic episode below.
