New Line Cinema are still working on a Nightmare on Elm Street reboot according to screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

In a time where Hollywood reboots of ’80s and ’90s horror icons are returning, or being worked on in some form or another – from Pennywise and Michael Myers to Candyman and Jason Voorhees – we have yet to see one of the most iconic horror icons come back on our cinema screens to scare us to death, Freddy Krueger.

The ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street‘ franchise was last seen in the form of Jackie Earle Haley playing the terrifying Freddy Krueger but the film was considered a very underwhelming and disappointing flop which did not resonate with the audiences of 2010. Although New Line Cinema has been dedicated to getting this franchise back to form and in the process have attached Aquaman’s screenwriter.

In a recent interview doing the promotion rounds for Aquaman
Johnson-McGoldrick had this to say about the stalled project:

“It’s still happening. Nothing is percolating just yet. The Conjuring universe is sort of first and foremost on New Line Cinema’s horror burner.”

With the recent boom of old horror icons receiving a great response in reboots, the screenwriter added: “Everybody wants to see Freddy again I think, so I think it’s inevitable at some point.”

Nightmare on Elm Street Still

It should come as no surprise that New Line Cinema would want to carry on first and foremost with the continued success of The Conjuring universe and it’s many spin offs as it’s been delivering them incredible commercial response and impressive box office numbers.

Though there may be one person who could sway them to put Freddy at the top, and it’s none other than the original star of the franchise Robert Englund who recently stated in an interview with Access Live that he’d like to return as the five-fingered knife menace as he felt he had “one left in him”.

Hopefully we’ll see Freddy gracing our screens again very soon and delivering on what made him one of Hollywood’s most horrific and prolific on screen killers.
