In a year where we had a lot of big releases from Far Cry 5, God of War and Monster Hunter: World to Dragon Ball Fighter Z, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and the hugely successful Red Dead Redemption 2, we find that another highly anticipated title had outperformed everybody’s expectations and taken the top spot above the highly approved and reviewed Red Dead Redemption 2! That game is none other than Nintendo’s mega-franchise Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Take a look at Amazon’s official top 5 best-selling game list below (excluding hardware):
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4
- Super Mario Party
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
I for one am very pleased for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to over rank Red Dead on what everyone thought would be the generic winner. It goes to show that a company who has everyone’s best interests at heart and cater specifically to all the core fans over the many years without resorting to any form of micro-transactions or cheap, quick buck tactics, can still solely outperform a game that does have those monetary systems in place.
More importantly, the game is a console exclusive and still managed to outperform other games on multiple platforms. I’m sure Nintendo and director of the franchise Masahiro Sakurai must be very happy with their efforts whilst also breaking the record for selling over 3 million units in eleven days, making it the fastest selling Switch game and entry to the franchise ever.
