Marvel’s latest superhero flick, Captain Marvel, is flying back to the 90s for another thrilling adventure. Though how much do you know about Captain Marvels, also known as Carol Danvers?
We already know that’s she going to end up as an Avenger since pretty much every hero in the cinematic and the comic book universe is, was, or most likely will be an Avenger.
We also know that the film is going to set in the 90s and she will be doing battle with the alien race known as The Skrulls, alongside Nick Fury and Agent Coulson. We can also be fairly certain that she will be coming to the rescue of Earth after the events of the Infinity War.
Of course, with any long-running superhero, some things have happened along the way which is indeed worth mentioning. I’ve hand-picked four things that are indeed worth telling you about Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel.
She began as a sort of a sidekick character
That’s right, Carol Danvers was stationed at an Airbase where Kree soldier, Mar-vell, came to Earth to set up shop as a protector of the planet taking the name of Captain Marvel. During one adventure Carol gained the same powers as Captain Marvel and took on the superhero name, Ms. Marvel.
The Captain Marvel legal thing
Back in the 50s. A comic book publisher called Fawcett Comics published a comic called Captain Marvel. DC Comics sued Fawcett as they felt this Captain Marvel character was too similar to Superman.
Despite losing this argument in court, DC obtained the rights to the character as Fawcett fell on hard times. They took the trademark and shelved it as superhero comics had lost their popularity in the 50s.
Marvel took advantage of this and published their own Captain Marvel character. They have to keep doing this so DC can’t use their trademark, this why there have been a few characters called Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers being the latest one.
She has also had a few different codenames
Over the years, Carol has been known as Warbird and Binary along with her Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel identities. Though Hank Pym has way more, as he has been known as Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Goliath, Yellow Jacket, and The Wasp.
She is also a recovering alcoholic
Carol had some issues with alcohol during the late 1990s and early 2000s and it was lucky that Tony Stark could help her onto the road to sobriety.
