Like many other Disney films, Hercules will be getting its own stage adaptation thanks to Public Theater this summer.
The stage version of the 1997 film will, of course, have the same basic story and will feature the film’s hit music. There will also be a few new tracks by Alan Menken and David Zippel, who worked on the original film’s soundtrack. Musical supervision and special arrangements will be handled by Menkin’s longtime collaborator Michael Kosarin.
Of course, there’s more to a hit show than its music. Public Theater’s resident director, Lear deBessonet, will be directing this one. Scenic design will be Dane Laffrey’s responsibility, Andrea Hood will be in charge of costume design, and Cookie Jordan will be in charge of wigs, hair, and makeup design. Lighting design will be headed by Tyler Micoleau, and sound design will be done by Kai Harada and Jessica Paz. At this time, there is no word on what the cast will look like.
Hercules will be premiering at the outdoor Delacorte Theater in Central Park. It will run from August 31 through September 8, and although there are no further commercial plans, we can always hope that a positive turnout will lead to more shows…
