20th Century Fox has unveiled the latest trailer for the next entry into the long-running X-Men franchise, X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
After many attempts to clear up director Brett Ratner’s mistake of X-Men 3: The Last Stand, we’ve now come to the re-telling of the Dark Phoenix storyline after Fox’s attempt to reverse the history of the franchise. The point of these later films was to clear up the timeline as the third film had managed to convolute the story and kill off major characters altogether, which in turn also damaged the continuation of the franchise.
X-Men 3 was their first attempt at the Dark Phoenix story which critically bombed in theaters and was overall not a hit with the fans, they then proceeded to correct this mistake as if it never happened by using another iconic storyline, Days of Future Past, which rewrote history and corrected the past so they could ultimately re-do Dark Phoenix and have us at this point now (yes, I realize this all sounds very confusing, it’s what happens when time-travel becomes a factor in anything). Though after all the trouble of doing this, I think I speak for a majority where the trailer just looked very… meh, overall.
The trailer shows actress Sophie Turner wreaking havoc in her Dark Phoenix form to all her fellow teammates, leaving a devastating wake of destruction behind her. The blame is squarely placed on Charles Xavier throughout for letting Jean get to this stage and now she has become the X-Men’s biggest threat to date as they aren’t dealing with just a new villain but also a beloved member of the X family that they may have to destroy to save the world from certain annihilation.
It also seems to tease the departure of another famous face, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, hinting at her demise in the opening of the trailer. In all honesty, why you would ever put Mystique as the central character of the last 3 films is a ridiculous notion but I guess Hollywood has always been more into giving the big name actors and actresses more screen time rather than sticking to the source material. It’s not all doom and gloom though, remember we’ve got Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 later this year! Yay for video games!

As much as I want this to be a good film, I feel the timing has been very poor due to the Disney/Fox transition deal which in turn will end 20th Century Fox’s run on the X-Men franchise, thankfully, and open them up to inevitable merger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve also heard rumblings of early screenings tanking the films success and having to re-shoot parts of the film to make up for this. The outlook is not good for the X-Men but let’s hope they merge with the MCU sooner rather than later.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is out in theaters on June 7, 2019.
