EA and BioWare’s multiplayer RPG / loot shooter, Anthem, has shot to the top of the UK Gaming Charts this week, pushing Far Cry New Dawn from the top spot.
Anthem, EA’s highly anticipated title, may have had a lukewarm reception from both players and critics, but it has managed to secure the top spot in the charts this week, selling comfortably more than last week’s entries, Far Cry New Dawn and Metro Exodus. That being said, overall Anthems sales were half of BioWare’s previous title Mass Effect Andromeda – another title panned by critics and players.
To put that into perspective, Mass Effect Andromeda’s launch saw sales half that of Mass Effect 3. So overall, Anthem’s launch is somewhat disappointing – though that was to be expected.
It also missed out on being one of the fastest selling titles of the year so far, likely due to EA’s staggered release across several of its Origin/EA Access platforms and questionable pre-order offerings. The fastest selling games so far this year are Resident Evil 2 and then Kingdom Hearts 3.
It’s likely a good chunk of sales were digital as there has been a growing trend of physical sales being down largely due to digital uptake. Chart-Track currently only keeps tabs on physical releases. Fortunately, March will be when digital sales are also included, though we’re unsure right now how those charts are going to appear (whether combined for separate).
As for last week’s releases, Far Cry New Dawn falls to second place, Metro Exodus falls down to fifth place, and Jump Force falls the furthest to seventeenth place. Crackdown 3 still fails to make it into the top ten falling further down to twenty-sixth place.
With the next couple of weeks sparse of any new releases, it’s likely that Anthem will be comfortably at the top, at least until The Division 2 comes out later in the month.
