Cringe is one of those terms that gets thrown around pretty liberally nowadays. Cringe is now used as a general catchall for anything which bears even the mildest resemblance to anything awkward and consequently its kind of lost much of its argumentative weight through aggressive overuse.
Having said that, Youtube Rewind for 2018 was fucking cringe, a sentiment which seems to have even been recognized by the executives of the online video streaming company.
In a recent End of Year Blog Post for the site, Youtube CEO, Susan Wojcicki supported the general internet consensus and suggested that the video was in fact ‘cringey’, stating it wasn’t YouTube’s intention for the video to become “the most disliked video on the internet” and added that it doesn’t align with the general trends and sentiment of the site as a whole. As a public safety announcement I’ll describe the opening seconds of the video just in case you’re curious: Youtube Rewind 2018 begins with Will Smith wishing for a video which combines the best of both worlds, namely Fortnite and Marques Brownlee. It has to be said that it is a powerful force that makes the Fresh Prince look uncool, but here we are.
