With Will Smith leaving the role of Deadshot in Suicide Squad 2, it seems Idris Elba is looking to take his place.

It was confirmed at the end of February that Will Smith was leaving his role as Deadshot in the next Suicide Squad film. I for one was quite sad at that news, I mean Will Smith and Margot Robbie were the two people which made the movie into a watchable mess, although in my opinion, the extended cut was miles better than the original offering. Suicide Squad did bring in over $700million in the box office, so you can easily see why they wanted to do a sequel.

Suicide Squad 2 isn’t due out until 6 August 2021, so a fair length of time to go yet, but not so far that Will Smith already has scheduling conflicts. It’s the first confirmed news with who is and isn’t appearing in the film, with rumors flying around everywhere. The only cast member that seems to be on board is Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, but that still hasn’t been confirmed yet.

With James Gunn, the new writer and director of Suicide Squad 2, being seen as a coup for DC since his sacking from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in the MCU, he has been given free rein with the movie. Suggestions have even come in that fans can see a brand new cast.

Will Smith as Deadshot in Suicide Squad

So, instead of writing Deadshot out of the film completely when Will Smith decided he had better things to do, who do you get as a replacement? Well according to Variety, Idris Elba is the actor Warner Bros. wants. This also means he will be jumping over from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after playing Heimdall in the Thor and Avengers films.

Personally, I can’t see him doing as good a job as Will Smith did with the character, but I am intrigued to see what he can do to make the character his own. Hopefully, with a script from James Gunn and a new cast, Suicide Squad 2 could potentially be a much better film than the first one. Only time will tell!
