In my humble opinion, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the pinnacle of the series. This year marks the tenth anniversary of its release, as well as being the turn of developer Infinity Ward to take the helm of the annual new title. It would appear that they have a celebration planned too!
A post found on the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) ratings board’s official website appears to have confirmed the production of a project under the name “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered”, which is a bit of a giveaway.
If you’re interested, the board unsurprisingly awarded the title an 18 rating, or M for Mature, if you’re prone to that. From what I can see, the post has promptly been taken down. Probably due to a few angry e-mails sent on behalf of Infinity Ward.
Depending on how you look at things, this is either really good or really bad news. Pessimistically, the remaster will most likely be bundled as an extra for the super-duper ultimate edition of the franchise’s next instalment, as was the case with the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered coming alongside Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Also, despite being an excellent campaign (especially by Call of Duty standards), with memorable, jaw-dropping moments and exciting action held together with the now classic controls of the series, the single player simply isn’t what this game is remembered for; it pales in comparison to the famous multiplayer.
Optimistically though, the remaster of the initial Modern Warfare proved to be so popular it received its own standalone release (which you can get for free this month on PlayStation Plus), that included every mode from the original, addictive multiplayer with a fresh coat of paint. We can hope that the demand for the sequel will result in similar action being taken.
Of course, we don’t have any official information on the release of a remaster of any form, and a lot could change between now and any form of announcement. But if Activision‘s track record is anything to go by, November cannot come fast enough.
