Superman, A.K.A. the Man of Steel, while he may be one of the strongest heroes that DC Comics has to offer, even the best have a few stains on their white t-shirts. One of the stains of Superman‘s shirt is of course very well publicized and that’s not just because it shares the name of an element on the Periodic Table.
An interesting (well interesting to me) point I’d like to make about Superman is how he is not the strongest character in the DC Universe with all characters being below as if they were a bunch of Cheerleaders doing a human Pyramid. There are a few characters as strong as Superman or even stronger including Doomsday, Zod, and other Kryptonians, Bizzaro and Shazam!.
Keep your eyes peeled, because Shazam! is going to come up again in what you’ll hopefully find to be an interesting way. If not, well… I tried and maybe you’ll have fun more fun watching Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. Though if you don’t want to expose yourself to that, here are four weaknesses of Superman.
The obvious one… Kryptonite
It’s the most well-known superhero weakness ever. The irradiated debris from Superman’s home planet of Krypton that causes him a huge amount of pain and weakens his powers.
Of course, you probably know that Lex Luthor has used Kryptonite against Superman a few times. Other notable Kryptonite users include Metallo and the Kryptonite Man.
His X-ray Vision can’t penetrate lead
If you ever become a super-villain and decide that you want to feud with Superman, make sure you become an X-ray-themed bad guy so you have a good excuse to cover yourself in Lead.
Interestingly, Lead can also block Kryptonite rays, so realistically, Superman could sacrifice his X-Ray Vision to never be weakened by Kryptonite – but where would the fun in that be?
If you’re a magic user Superman powers won’t work that well on you. That’s why Shazam!, a magic-powered hero would have a distinct advantage in a fight with him as seen in the 2010 movie – Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam where Superman was susceptible to Black Adam’s mystical powers.
It was also a theme brought up in the CW series, Smallville.
Red Sun Radiation
Superman’s powers come from the Earth’s Yellow Sun. So unlike Kryptonite, which makes him weak and unwell, if he was exposed to a Red Sun, they’d be zapped away, or at least due to the Red Sun having weaker rays, his powers wouldn’t get the energy they need, so he’d simply become a normal human.
The good news is that this doesn’t happen instantly, as Superman has been known to have powers while near the Red Sun, his powers do deplete rapidly.
