This week RuneScape developer Jagex announced a number of new hires at the company, one of whom is set to work on a new online action RPG.
Jagex announced two senior hires this week as part of the company’s wider recruitment drive that’ll see “the Cambridge studio boost its headcount by more 25% by the end of 2019,” they said in a press release. Of those two hires is Dan Vargas, previously of EA Games and Ubisoft, who’ll be joining Jagex as Art Director of “an unannounced online action role-playing game.”
Of course, details on this new game are being kept under wraps right now, but Vargas’ previous work on Need for Speed: Underground and the Assassin’s Creed franchise shows that the game is definitely going to have some pretty environments.
The other new hire at Jagex is Ian Thomas as its new Technical Director in its Publishing Platform team. His previous role was Director of Engineering at Glint, Inc., an employee engagement platform.
“Jagex continues to attract and secure industry-respected expertise and Ian and Dan are key hires who will strengthen our creative and technical management teams,” said CEO Phil Mansell. “We recognise the importance of technical innovation and investing in exceptional talent, with almost 100 new hires targeted, and further modernising our technology, are key elements of our strategy through 2019 and beyond as we build on our portfolio of living games.”
It’ll definitely be interesting to see what Jagex is working on in the ARPG space. The company recently announced it was going into publishing with Jagex Partners, with a focus on “live games”.
