Paramount Pictures has finally released their first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie. The movie will put the 1990’s video game hedgehog and move him into the real world, very similar to what they’ve done to Pikachu for next month’s Detective Pikachu. The big difference between the two though is Pikachu is cute and voiced by Ryan Reynolds, whereas Sonic is not and voiced by Ben Schwartz. If anything, Sonic should be featuring in a horror movie.
Okay, it sounds like I’m disappointed about the trailer and to be honest with you, I am. Sonic was a game I’ve grown up with and after seeing how well Pokemon looks in their live action trailers, I had got my hopes set high. Sonic just looks odd.
The trailer goes on to show James Marsden’s character finding Sonic and helping him take down Robotnik whilst evading the US Government. Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the film is portrayed by Jim Carrey and was once again another disappointment. It’s just Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey with a giant mustache on. Still, the very last clip of the trailer shows him looking more like Dr. Robotnik. Maybe he will be good in it in the end?
The film already suffered backlash from fans when Paramount released a picture of a silhouetted Sonic back in December, mainly for its weirdly muscular legs and furry outset.
Sonic the Hedgehog is likely to struggle to hit well with fans of the series due to the changes to the lovable hedgehog and Robotnik, but you never know! We will have to wait until 8 November to find out if it’s any good though. Meanwhile, check the trailer out below and let me know your thoughts:
