Tom Hanks is reportedly in negotiations to play Colonel Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic about Elvis’ life. His life long manager, born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk spotted Elvis when he was a youngster and one of the main reasons for Elvis’ success.
Elvis released his first single ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ under Tom Parker’s management which moved him along into the world of fame. He was also the person that told Elvis to join the army as it would look good for him and further his career. Parker also predicted that this spell in the army would create further demand of Elvis, and boy was he right!
The manager had his own battles to deal with in the form of gambling problems and two months in a mental health hospital. He also had an illegal status within the US, so certainly enough for the subject of a film.
On top of this, it would be another film for Tom Hanks to add to his biopics. He has played Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks, Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, Captain Sully in the film Sully and Captain Phillips in errr… well… Captain Phillips just to name a few. This role would be certainly something to add to his film list and one that could potentially and hopefully see him win his third Oscar. How he hasn’t won more I will never know!
