The Curse of La Llorona has taken the top spot over the Easter weekend. The film topped expectations and took a decent $26.5m domestically, way ahead of the estimations. What is even more impressive is the fact that the film was panned by critics, but still managed to pull in that figure. The horror genre is really appealing at the moment and is beating most expectations so far this year, especially with films such as Us and Pet Sematary drawing in more money than expected.
Speaking of Us and Pet Sematary, both are still in the top 10, both of which taking a respectable $4mil. Us falls into ninth after 5 weeks in the top 10, but with a respectable $170mil total domestically. Pet Sematary drops to seventh after 3 weeks with a domestic total of $49mil. Not as much as Us, but still just as respectable.
So three horror films covered in the top 10, what’s happened to those superhero movies I hear you ask! Well, Shazam! has dropped down to second after its third week, still pulling in a decent $17mil which has pushed its total domestically to $121mil. Captain Marvel probably had the better week though by actually seeing a 6% uplift from last week and adding $9.1mil in its seventh week. It also means that domestically it has hit a whopping $400mil! Pretty impressive eh?
So what lies in third place then? Well, a new film has entered into the top 10 and that comes in the name of Breakthrough, an American Christian drama film which was inspired by a true story. It took a fairly solid $11.1mil in its opening weekend but surely won’t remain so high up next week.
The rest of the top 10 is made up of films that have donned the list previously. Little comes in fifth place, pulling in $8.4mil on its second week which is a 45% drop week-on-week. Dumbo, the little Disney elephant sits in sixth with a $6.8mil take on its fourth week, bringing the worldwide total over $300mil.
