During Sony’s newest State of Play stream — their take on Nintendo’s “Nintendo Direct” format for announcements — we finally got a look at some new footage for the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy 7.
The minute-long trailer showcases footage from the game’s very first segment: the raid on the reactor in Midgar. Cues have clearly been taken from the flashy FF15, because these new scenes are incredibly stylish.
In addition to the explosive events at the reactor, we get a better look at both Cloud and Barrett. Aerith also makes an appearance, and the closing seconds of the trailer gives us a look Final Fantasy 7‘s infamous antagonist, Sephiroth.
It goes without saying, but everything looks incredibly different from the original game, which is now over 20 years old. Even so, the character designs are clearly faithful to their originals, just a whole lot prettier.
Everything shown so far focuses entirely on the early Midgar sections of the game, but that’s no surprise: we’ve known for a long time that the remake will be an episodic release. Given how long it’s taken them to get this far, who knows when will see the final chapter of the game?
It has certainly been a long time coming, and it’s a relief to see fresh footage from the game. Here’s hoping that it doesn’t suffer the same issues as FF15 before it, which had a very protracted and troubled development.
There’s no release date for the Final Fantasy 7 remake just yet, but the newly released trailer promises more info to come next month.
